4/8/2022 3:32:22 PMOn the eighth, Seamus Power was in the bunker on the right off the tee and laid up to 110 yards. But his wedges have been poor all morning and he spins his approach back to leave himself 50 feet from the pin. That's three-putt teritory if he's not careful and so it proves - that's three birdies in four holes for Power. The next two hours are going to be a grind to make the cut.
-
4/8/2022 3:35:47 PMThe wind is really getting up here. McIlroy is playing into the teeth of it on the third and he comes up short, bouncing off the bank at the front and sliding back down the hill. That's a bad mistake - this is going to be a killer to get up and down from 25 yards short fo the green.
-
4/8/2022 3:42:32 PMOur leader has ticked off another routine par. Im gets up and down from the left of seven - his scrambling has been really terrific so far. He moves to 8 at -5.Meanwhile, McIlroy's chip just about holds on on the fringe - it's dying to fall back down the hill but it doesnt so Roryhas 12 feet uphill to save his par. And he does it! That's an absolutely massive par save!LEADERBOARD (tee-time/hole completed in brackets)-5 Sungjae Im (7)-4 Dustin Johnson (5), Cameron Smith (6.30)
-3 Corey Connors (9), Danny Willett (5.57), Joaquin Neimann (6.41), Scottie Scheffler (7.03)-2 Charl Schwartzel (10), Patrick Cantlay (4), Jason Kokrak (5.57)The IrishE Rory McIlroy (3),+1 Shane Lowry (6.08)+2 Pádraig Harrington (1)+5 Seamus Power (8) -
-
4/8/2022 3:52:48 PMIf it gets really windy and annnoying out there, we all know who it will suit. And who's this standing on the second green with a five-footer for birdie? Why it's Pádraig Harrington of course. He's kept his bunker shot nicely below the hole and his putt is pure and true. Harrington moves to +1. He'll be loving all this - the windier and wilder the better.
-
4/8/2022 3:57:00 PMMcIlroy leaves himself around 40 feet for birdie at the fourth and cosies one down to the side of the hole for a no-drama par.
-
4/8/2022 4:05:00 PMIm was in trouble off the tee on eight and had to settle for a two-putt par. And what a shot from Seamus Power on the 10th! A towering iron from 197 yards into four feet, just to the right of the hole. This is no gimme - it's downhill and slippery - but it's a fantastic chance to get some momentum going in his round.
-
4/8/2022 4:06:31 PMAnd he holes it! That's Power's first birdie of the day and he's back to +4. The cutline is a moveable feast at this point of course but with the way the wind is getting up, you'd have to think +4 will definitely make it and anything up to +6 might even have a chance. That's a huge birdie for Power in his quest to make the weekend.
-
4/8/2022 4:15:49 PMMcIlroy is on trouble on the fifth, after he pulls his drive into the mess down the left. He finds a hole in the trees to get it up just short of the green but this is a brutal up and down. It comes up well short and he has 14 feet for par. It misses and he's back to +1.But this isn't easy for anyone now. Dustin Johnson drops a shot at the seventh after getting it trouble off the tee. Back on the third, Harrington has made the same mistake McIlroy did but hasn't got up and down, he slides back to +2.LEADERBOARD (tee-time/hole completed in brackets)-5 Sungjae Im (8)-4 Cameron Smith (6.30)
-3 Dustin Johnson (7), Danny Willett (5.57), Joaquin Neimann (6.41), Scottie Scheffler (7.03)-2 Charl Schwartzel (13), Corey Connors (11), Jason Kokrak (5.57)The Irish+1 Rory McIlroy (5), Shane Lowry (6.08)+2 Pádraig Harrington (3)+4 Seamus Power (10) -
4/8/2022 4:19:22 PMAnother good save from Im on the 9th. His approach was careless, pulling if left of the green from the middle of the fairway. He left himself a six-footer with his chip and weas equal to the task. He stays on -5. The lead won't be much better than that tonight.
-
4/8/2022 4:24:39 PMDown on the difficult 11th, Power has chipped up to 12 feet and has that left for his par. No good. That's his birdie handed back immediately and he's out to +5 again. It's going to be a rollercoaster all the way home for him.
-
4/8/2022 4:30:08 PMTime for a few updates from around the course...Jordan Spieth has offered up his usual mix of the ridiculous and sublime, rolling in a rare birdie on the fifth but missing a two-footer on the third. He's +1 for the tournament.Matt Fitzpatrick has just rolled in a brilliant birdie on the sixth to get himself back to -1.And Schwartzel has hung in there to get himself to -2 with birdies at 10 and 13. Plenty happening.
-
4/8/2022 4:35:21 PMHere comes Corey Connors! After a tee-shot at 12 that would have had his knees wobbling, he has chipped iun from the front of the green. That moves him back to -3. With Sungjae Im facing a treacherous up and down from the side of the 10th, that's the right move at the right time from the Canadian.Im chips up to seven feet - he can't keep holing these can he? Nope, not this time. He falls back to -4.LEADERBOARD (tee-time/hole completed in brackets)-4 Sungjae Im (10), Cameron Smith (6.30)
-3 Corey Connors (12), Dustin Johnson (7), Danny Willett (5.57), Joaquin Neimann (6.41), Scottie Scheffler (7.03)-2 Charl Schwartzel (13), Jason Kokrak (5.57)The Irish+1 Rory McIlroy (6), Shane Lowry (6.08)+2 Pádraig Harrington (4)+4 Seamus Power (11) -
-
4/8/2022 4:36:46 PMOnly eight of the field are under par for their round today. If this is the easier wave, the afternoon is going to see some carnage.
-
4/8/2022 4:41:00 PMBad news for Power on the 12th. He overhits his tee shot and lands in the bunker at the back of the green. It's a tough up and down from back there and he doesn't manage it. That's another bogey and he's gone out to +6. This is getting away from him.
-
4/8/2022 4:44:53 PMOn the seventh, McIlroy has hit a couple of nice shots to 30 feet but his birdie attempt has rolled eight feet past. This would be a really careless bogey to make - and fair play, he makes it to get out with his par.
-
4/8/2022 4:53:05 PMOh wow, that is a phenomenal shot into 11 from Im. From 188 yards, he has pinged one in to 12 feet and has a prime birdie chance here. This would be some reply to the bogey he made on the 10th. Ach, it just mnisses. That's a shame after a fantastic shot.Johnson has made a hash of the 9th, having been offline off the tee. He fails to get up and down from the bunker on the left and that sends him back to -2. Meanwhile, Morikawa birdies the same hole to turn on 34 and move to -1.LEADERBOARD (tee-time/hole completed in brackets)-4 Sungjae Im (11), Cameron Smith (6.30)
-3 Corey Connors (13), Danny Willett (5.57), Joaquin Neimann (6.41), Scottie Scheffler (7.03)-2 Charl Schwartzel (13), Harold Varner (10), Dustin Johnson (9), Patrick Cantlay (8), Jason Kokrak (5.57)The Irish+1 Rory McIlroy (7), Shane Lowry (6.08)+3 Pádraig Harrington (6)+6 Seamus Power (12) -
4/8/2022 4:54:04 PMAnd with that, I'll be handing over to the far more sage and wise Johnny Watterson. He's a much better golfer too so he's exactly who you need to see you through your Friday night. So long!
-
4/8/2022 5:00:02 PMTiger in 45 minutes. Wearing black today and looking , well what's the right word. Predatory?
-
4/8/2022 5:07:27 PMMcIroy with a 25 footer for birdie on the par-5, 8th hole will be happy with that approach. He needs something to click in what has been a one birdie and one bogey front nine so far. But today is blustery and he is just four shots behind the current on course leaders on -3. Cameron Smith is due out soon.
-
4/8/2022 5:10:48 PMRory gets out of eight with a par five. His uphill putt left him with a tap in after being 40 yards off course from the tee. That cost a shot with a chip back into play. Walk on.
-
4/8/2022 5:15:57 PMA beauty off the tee from Rory (+1) on the 9th. His partner Koepka also hit a good drive but his ball faded right and has trickled onto the pine straw. He's struggling again today. Body language is dull low wattage and he's 3 over par.The wind? DJ just hit a drive into it 268 yards. That's 40 0r 50 back of normal.
-
-
4/8/2022 5:26:28 PMRory (+1) on nine from 113 yards is perfectly positioned. But again he lands the ball three tiers and 40 feet away from the pin. His long putt is good and he taps in for par but there could be swing thoughts going on now.

4/8/2022 5:40:48 PMYikes ! Lowry on the first green with a short 12 inch putt pushes it left and it lips out of the hole. Not the start to round 2 he wanted. Bogey at the first and +2 overall.Leader Cameron Smith (-4) has just started his second round.Rory misses the 10th green and is in a greenside bunker.Tiger is on the first tee.
-
4/8/2022 5:45:07 PMHUGE crowd at the first tee. All for Tiger (-1). He's in navy blue, not black. He hits. A big cheer goes up but He is pulls an anxious face as his ball nudges towards the right hand side of the fairway.
-
4/8/2022 5:48:54 PMAustralian Smith starts with bogey 5 and drops a shot and off the leaderboard top slot. Both Willett and Im lead on -4 with Smith now on -3.Rory splashes out of the bunker on 10 having missed the green. He doesn't make the putt from seven feet and that's a bogey for +2.
-
4/8/2022 5:59:07 PMA big hush for Tiger on the first green. But not in a good way. His drive ended up in a deep bunker right. He could only get his ball to the side of the green and his pitch rolled on a bit to seven feet past. You expect Tiger to make them. But not this time and he falls back to level par after the first of the day.
-
4/8/2022 6:04:57 PMTiger is on the second tee after watching Niemann hit his ball right and let go of his driver. He ends up in the bunker. Tiger, looking for a slight draw, pushes his second of the day right too and it looks like he is in the same bunker as his partner.
-
4/8/2022 6:10:00 PMGreat recovery from Lowry after making bogey at the first hole. He immediately bounced back on the par-5 second hole with birdie and just misses another birdie putt on the third. The smile is back on his face and he is back to +1.Power is playing 18 and is +4. He's had a mixed bag of five bogeys and three birdies today. The early projected cut is +4.
-
4/8/2022 6:18:36 PMHoles 10 and 11 will haunt McIlroy if he fails to make the cut. A bogey on 10 and a double bogey on 11 makes his card look pretty ragged at +4. That included a bogey putt from four feet on 11 which he missed. He's throwing it all away at the moment. His drive at 11 is perfect. His second goes miles right and into the gallery as he screams fore. His third just makes the green and he 3-putts.
-
-
4/8/2022 6:28:19 PMMcIlroy has hit a good tee shot at the par-5, 13th hole. At 4-over par he's going to need to go for the green in two. He has a good look at it although you would have to think his confidence is a little shot, especially in his iron play.
-
4/8/2022 6:32:02 PMGood news out on 18. Power looks like he has made the cut in his first ever Masters tournament. He played a great back nine in one under par to close his second round on +4.The cut is currently projected at +4 so at the moment Power has a weekend of golf.
-
4/8/2022 6:32:17 PM
-
4/8/2022 6:39:28 PMTiger watchers. Bogey, par, bogey start from him with another missed short putt at the third. Far from the start he wanted, he shakes his head and walks off to the forth. He is +1 through three holes.Im and Willett lead on -4.
